History WORKS concentrates on building teachers' knowledge of six core themes of American History, each broad enough to encourage historical narratives and sequential patterns in history, not just moments in time.

The History WORKS project has concluded it's three year run serving the grades 6-12 Social Studies teachers in the Columbus Public Schools.

This site is a product of the work undertaken. Inside you will find teacher-generated and tested, standards-aligned and primary source-based activities that can be directly incorporated in the Ohio Social Studies Curriculum.

The Ohio Historical Society, The Ohio State University and the Columbus Public Schools look forward to continuing their commitment to improving History education through the collaborative development of innovative resources for teachers and students in Ohio.

Harriet Beecher Stowe publishes Uncle Tom's Cabin

Stowe's story, originally a serial in The National Era, was published in book form in two volumes. Uncle Tom's Cabin was a best seller in the United States, England, Europe, Asia, and translated into over 60 languages.


July 2, 1890
Congress enacts legislation to curb corporate monopolies

In the wake of labor unrest and growing corporate power and greed, the public began to clamor for government regulation of business. Congress responded with the Sherman Anti-Trust Act in 1890.


1916-1929
Marcus Garvey & the Universal Negro Improvement Assoc.

During the upheaval of the post-war years, Garvey's message of racial pride and self-reliance appealed to the many African Americans who were moving to northern cities. The UNIA claimed to have 6,000,000 members by 1923.
