Description

Allow students, in groups or individually, to examine the primary source linked under Resources to the right, while answering the questions below in order. The questions are designed to guide students into a deeper analysis of the source and sharpen associated cognitive skills.

Level I: Description
1. What was the purpose of the society?
2. Who was John Rankin?

Level II: Interpretation
1. How would you apply what you learned about this anti-slavery society to aid you in the creation of a just and equitable society for all?
2. What approach would you use to organize people in your community to work toward creating a just and equitable society for all?

Level III: Analysis
1. What evidence can you find from the text that lends itself to the need to educate slaves in Pre Civil War America?
2. What ideas espoused by this society justify their existence?

  • History 6-8, Benchmark G: Analyze the causes and consequences of the American Civil War.
