David Wilborn Ex-Slave Narrative

Description

Allow students, in groups or individually, to examine the primary source linked under Resources to the right, while answering the questions below in order. The questions are designed to guide students into a deeper analysis of the source and sharpen associated cognitive skills.

Level I: Description
1. When and how did David get his freedom?
2. How did David learn to read and write?

Level II: Interpretation
1. What questions would you ask in an interview with David?
2. Construct a timeline that shows the events in David's life.

Level III: Analysis
1. What conclusions can you draw from the reading about David's level of intelligence?
2. Add to your timeline to make it multiple tier; add who was president and any other important U.S. events that fall into the years of David's life.
