The Second World War and the Rise of American Power

In 1941, as Americans debated the issue of entering the second world war, Life magazine publisher Henry Luce wrote an editorial calling for greater American leadership in economics, humanitarianism, culture, technology, and ideology in order "to create the first great 'American century.'" To accomplish this, the United States had to abandon isolationism and actively expand its values across the globe. This session will explore how and why the United States gained such power, how it exercised that power at home and abroad, and the consequences of those actions.
